Bike to Work Day: Thursday, May 13, 2010

Presented by:

Save the Date and Get Ready to GET ROLLING again for the East Bay's 17th (Bay Area's 16th) annual bike extravaganza

Bicycling in the East Bay continues to grow at amazing rates–43% increase in 2009; bicycle mode share doubled in the last three years! For 2010, the East Bay Bicycle Coalition will feature bridge bike commuters, bike-friendly businesses, bike commuters of the year, the always fun Team Bike Challenge, and lots of Energizer Stations on Bike to Work Day. If you are not a bicycle commuter yet, consider taking one of our free urban bicycle safety classes and learn how to get started. If your kids are starting to ride, sign up for a free Family Cycling Workshop. If you don't know how to ride a bike, we also will be offering classes to get you up on the saddle.

Nominations open for Bicycle-Friendly Business Awards

Know a company that super-promotes bicycling? Want to recognize them? All you have to do is...

Deadline for nominations: March 26, 2010. Each winning company will receive an award certificate from the East Bay Bicycle Coalition recognizing their company as an official “bicycle-friendly business,” a membership in the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, and an EBBC bike commute starter kit that includes bike maps, bike lights, stickers, bicycle lapel pins, EBBC newsletter and more.

Bike Commuter of the Year Award Nominations open April 1, 2010.

Want to help as an EBBC Volunteer?

Every year, hundreds of volunteers help with Bike to Work Day, staffing neighborhood energizer stations, helping get food & drink donations, rounding up goodies for the musette bags, putting up posters and flyers around town, media outreach, event planning, hauling things, coordinating help for our big Bike Away from Work Party, and much more. If you are interested in helping, please contact our Outreach Coordinator, Carrie Harvilla.

Energizer Stations

It’s time to reserve your Energizer Stations for Bike to Work Day
First, thanks again for volunteering to host an Energizer Station last year and for taking good bicycle counts. We saw huge increases last year in the number of bicyclists out on the street (43% increase!) and for 2010 we intend to keep the momentum rolling. Please contact our Bike to Work Day Coordinator Dave Campbell if you plan to host an Energizer Station again for 2010. We need to know:

  1. Name: of Energizer Station
  2. Location: of Energizer Station
  3. New?: Is this a new Energizer Station
  4. Hours: of Energizer Station operation
  5. Host: Name and contact information (email and phone#)
  6. # of bags: that you request (the number of bags you are allotted depends on many factors, but starts with how many you would like)

A quick heads up, we are planning on expanding our membership outreach efforts this year at the Energizer Stations and will have more details at the March planning meeting. But plans include trainings for Energizer Stations volunteers so that everyone is more comfortable and excited about helping out this year. Thus, it’s not too early to start rounding up volunteers.

We would like to have your Energizer Station requests by March 31, 2010.

Last year we saw a 45% increase in bicycling on Bike to Work Day over the previous year (good work everyone!), which itself saw a 25% increase over two years ago (Wow! supergood work). We are moving, err–riding, in the right direction. We’ll have much to discuss including plans for a series of events: Bike to School Day (date: t.b.d.); Bike to Work Day on May 13; Bike to the Market Day on May 22 (10% discount for bicyclists); and Bike Night at the Movies on various dates in May.

Hope you can join us. And please feel free to pass this invitation along to anyone who may be interested. Thanks.
