Founded in 1972, East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting bicycling as an everyday means of transportation and recreation.

EBBC safeguards the interest of bicyclists in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. EBBC works with 33 cities, both counties, Caltrans, and other government agencies to improve conditions for cyclists. Membership benefits include the newsletter rideOn, monthly meeting programs, shop discounts, and the opportunity to participate in "hands-on" efforts to improve cycling conditions. We count over 1400 paid members, plus several thousand members of 19 affiliated clubs and organizations that are part of the coalition.

Current Goals, Activities & Programs

As a grassroots, bicycle advocacy organization, EBBC works to heighten awareness of bicycling needs with elected officials, government staff, and the public. The EBBC offers free valet bicycle parking at large public events. These events and employer transportation fairs give us the opportunity to educate both bicyclists and motorists with our bicycle safety quiz (also available online and in Chinese and Spanish). We also support bicycle diversion training programs (AKA Bicycle traffic school) in the East Bay. Our two published maps depict suggested on-street and off-road bike routes for commuters and recreational use along with route gradient and bicycle-friendly transit. Members are kept informed of advocacy issues with eleven issues of rideOn each year.

Current goals and activities include:

  • Finding community liaisons for all 33 cities that EBBC represents
  • Promoting bicycle advisory committees
  • Coordinating the annual Bike-to-Work Day in the East Bay
  • Bicycle access on all roads, at all facilities, and on all transit for both sides of the hills
  • Improving BART access and parking
  • Obtaining safe and convenient bicycle parking in downtown areas and other key destinations
  • Watchdog the spending of millions $$$ we have succeeded in allocating for bicycle facilities
  • Plus, each year EBBC supports legislation to promote bicycling and adopts specific campaigns to close gaps and improve access

Mission in Action

The EBBC's volunteers and affiliated clubs successfully advocated for bicycle access on BART trains soon after we were founded in 1972. Bicyclists are also now accommodated on all local and transbay buses, ferries, local Amtrak trains, and on shuttles over bridges that do not currently offer direct access. We advocate for direct access on the seven transbay bridges that serve the East Bay counties. Much still needs to be done to improve transit access, make bikeway improvements and offer secure bicycle parking at transit and most destinations. A great deal of our efforts focus on the development of local bicycle transportation plans in the 33 cities where we represent bicyclists' interests. We further promote the formation of grassroots Bicycle Advisory Committees (BACs) to review plans and prioritize funding. The EBBC also advocates for countywide and regional bicycle planning and funding. We faithfully represent all bicyclists' interests. Join us!
