Dear Friends of Alex,

We want to let you know that Alex passed away yesterday, Sunday, August 5th, 2007 at the age of 86. He died peacefully in his sleep, in the care of family, in his home at Chaparral House in Berkeley. Alex's spirit was alive and well until the very end. Despite physical limitations in his later years, his inner essence remained intact and we enjoyed tremendously rich times together as a family. He felt our love and he felt all the love and support of his friends and his extended family. He will truly be missed. We want to once again thank all of you who have been with him on this journey.

We will be holding a memorial service for Alex, to which all his family, friends, and colleagues are invited (See Below). We will post further information on Alex's website in the near future. Please forward this message to folks that knew Alex.

There is a memory book you can sign at the top of the web page, if you'd like to send your well wishes to the Family, or perhaps contribute a memory to share. There is a place to leave your e-mail address there as well if you'd like to be contacted about the memorial.

Peace and love,

-Ron & Dave

Grizzly Peak Cyclists Memorial Ride

Dear Grizzlies,

Here are some details about the GPC Alex Zuckermann Memorial Ride including some Eating.

The Ride is on September 8. There is a online listing. We will meet at Orinda BART at 8:45. After the usual preliminaries the ride will leave at 9:15. The rides will be over by about 11:30. We are still looking for leaders for the Larghetto and Allegretto rides.

We will regroup at Orinda Community Park. That is next to the Orinda Community Center in Orinda Village (See map). The picnic spaces are first come, first served. I will get there early enough to claim some space.

The Memorial (starts around 11:30)
I will have a display with some aspects of Alex and his
and friends. If you have anything - his writing, your reminiscences, some photos, noteworthy quotes - you want to contribute to remind us about what it was like when he was around, please can you get that to me by Wednesday evening. If you want to save it up and surprise us all on Saturday that's ok too. The memorial itself will last about an hour.

The Potluck (starts around 12:30)
If you have a favorite dish you like to share we will appreciate it. If you just want to bring food for yourself that works too. If you want to share but don't know what to bring let's do it by last name: If your name starts with

  • A-C: Vegetable dish
  • D-G: Drinks. (The department of Parks and Rec was ambivalent on the subject of alcohol - suggesting that it be kept in a brown bag. Really, the main concern is abuse. So, be thoughtful about what and how much you bring.)
  • H-K: Main course. Vegetarian dishes welcome
  • L-R: Salads
  • S-Z: Desserts

Paper and plastic goods will be provided.

Parking:
If you come to ride by BART or bike, or if you park at Orinda BART, we can ferry your contributions over to the community park. Otherwise there is quite a bit of parking in Orinda Village.
