Demise of the World's Shortest Freeway - Groundbreaking Ceremony

Bring your bicycle out in front of 1200 Lakeshore Avenue at 2PM, Thursday, May 6, to help us celebrate the groundbreaking for a major improvement for bicyclists in Oakland.
In 2002, EBBC was one of many organizations supporting passage of Oakland's Measure DD. The $198 million bond issue was passed overwhelmingly by voters. The money raised by the bonds was to be used on a variety of projects, including recreational facilities, bike/ped facilities, creek preservation, and major improvements to Lake Merritt. The largest single Measure DD project was the replacement of the "world's shortest freeway" across the 12th Street Dam with more bike/ped friendly city streets.
Those who currently ride across the 12th Street dam are undoubtedly familiar with the temporary bike lane, created by isolating the lane closest to the lake with colorful orange barriers. Now, after many delays, that inadequate temporary lane will be replaced, beginning with the groundbreaking ceremony on May 6. Not only will the construction result in navigable city streets with crosswalks and traffic signals, but also substantial new open space will be added to the shores of Lake Merritt. Further, the channel between the lake and the estuary will be improved for access by canoes and kayaks, and there will be bike/ped paths along both sides of the channel. See the following .pdf for an illustration of the completed project.
Completion of the new 12th Street will complement other Measure DD project around Lake Merritt, including the new bike lanes on Lakeshore Avenue, renovation of the municipal boat house (The Lake Chalet), and renovation of the 18th Street pier.

are bike lanes included in this plan?
The park looks great but why aren't there just bike lanes included in the plan, down 1st Ave and across 12th St, like there are for the rest of Lakeshore? The bike/ped path is not going to navigable at any reasonable speed with all of the joggers and children that will be present, and the temporary barriers at least currently provide a specific space for cyclists. Is that going to be lost with the new construction?
Am I missing something, as what would be the expected flow of bike traffic around that area, including from the potential E 12th St bikeway project, or the potential bike lanes on International as part of the Oakland BRT project?
are bike lanes included in this plan?
In response to prinzrob's questions, Joel Peter, the project manager states, "Yes, the class 2 bike lanes will run along 1st Avenue in both directions, connecting to the lanes on Lakeshore that we recently completed. These lanes don’t show up well on the illustrative plan. But once you get down to International Blvd, the illustrative plan shows the lanes running down across the new bridge and over to Oak St. Riders will have the option of using these fast class 2 lanes or the slower multi-use path in the park."
Joel also notes that addtitional updates on the 12th St. project can be found on the City website at 12th Street Project Status
Great News!
Yes! I'll be there with bells on. Good to know there'll be bike lanes on 1st Ave.
thanks
Thanks for the explanation and quick response, and now that you have mentioned it I do see the Class 2 bike lanes in the graphic, the markings for which turned into dark blobs due to the resolution of the graphic. I have seen too many potentially great projects marred by the omission of a single, important element, so it is good to know that the 12th St project has been so well thought out.
I think the existing, new bike lanes on Lakeshore are terrific, and hope that the additional lanes are of the same quality.
