Bicycle route: Berkeley to Davis. Suggestions?

This sounds like a good way to go, though I haven't yet tried it. The email is worth saving.

Mike is right, there is not really a good direct route
to Davis from Berkeley. So, I would go the way I
usually go to Sacramento, and detour back over the
Yolo Causeway (I-80) bike path. Here's the route,
which I feel is more pleasant than any of the
northerly ways:

1. BART to Pittsburg/Bay Point
2. De Anza Trail (entrance across the street from
BART sta. driveway) to Wilbur Ave. via Antioch streets
as necessary (more of the trail has opened since I
last went - you will need to map out the section to
get to Wilbur and/or Antioch bridge)
3. Antioch Br./Calif. 160 N (two lane high bridge
with a wide shoulder - the only real hill between
Antioch and Sac. area)
4. Calif. 12 W (across funky steel deck bridge)
5. River Rd./Old Calif. 84 N (just on other side of
bridge, N of downtown Rio Vista) to ferry at end
6. On Ryer Island, either Old 84 (west side) or East
River Road to bridge to Prospect Island (alternate to
this and segments 7-9 below is to take ferry from E.
River Rd. to Grand Island Rd. N and then L. on Calif.
160, which turns E over the river shortly, but the
road continues straight as S. River Rd.)
7. Holland Rd. E - just over bridge, turn right on
this short stretch. Not sure how the surface is these
days
8. Waukena Rd. N (parts of this may have a rough
surface - alternate is to stay on Old 84, turn R on
Courtland Rd., L on Jefferson, R on Netherlands)
9. Continue N on Netherlands Rd
10. Turn L (N) on S. River Rd. @ Clarksburg
11. Turn R on Jefferson (which you could have also
stayed on since Courtland Rd., for a shorter but less
scenic ride from the Sac. river) in W. Sac. and cross
over the canal lock (only one in Calif.?)
12. Stay on Jefferson to W. Capitol, or go on side
streets such as L on 15th and bear R on Westacre
13. L (W) on W. Capitol (has bike lanes), straight to
entrance of bike path on I-80 to Davis (not the most
pleasant ride, but worth it for having ridden through
the gorgeous delta country!)

An alternate is to go S thru Rio Vista to Montezuma
Hills Rd. to Birds Landing Rd. N to Rio-Dixon Rd. N
(Calif. 113) and then 113 or farm road alternatives to
Pedrick Rd./Russel Blvd. (with separate bike path) or
Robben to Tremont to Old Davis Rd. into the south end
of campus (crosses UC Davis exit from I-80).

Maps showing these routes that I used are
unfortunately no longer available: AAA Sacramento
Valley Region (or Bay and River Area) - a much lesser
level of detail is shown on the current Coast and
Valley edition; and Krebs Cycle Products N. SF
Bay/Sac. touring map (maybe Krebs has some old stock
in a storage room??). If anyone knows of other maps,
I would like to hear about them...

Here's a different perspective:

Grizzly Peak Cyclists has had a ride from Berkeley to Davis for the
last two years. Here is some distilled info on the routes we used:

These are routes to get from Berkeley to Davis.

Davis Bike Club has some excellent maps online at
http://www.davisbikeclub.org/ClubDocuments/AreaMaps/maps.htm

I sent this to a friend a few months ago.

I've been using Google Maps which allows you to add successive
destinations. It's biggest drawback is that it doesn't know about
bike or pedestrian paths.

The biggest hassle is getting through Vallejo and Fairfield. The
route through Vallejo was one I lifted from Dan, another club
member. I made my own way through Fairfield, using the Fairfield
Linear Park, which is about 4 miles long and 30 feet wide. Dan's
route round the northwest of Fairfield is nicer. On the other hand I
prefer my route from the eastern end of Putah Creek Road (Road 31).

Anyway here's probably more than you wanted:

Berkeley->Cordelia http://tinyurl.com/yhau3n
Cordelia->Davis (Dan) http://tinyurl.com/yzmxnk

My route from Cordelia:

Cordelia->Solano College http://tinyurl.com/ykr4o8
once you get to Solano College you ride through the parking lot
holding to the right until you enter the Linear Park just before the
ballfield.
Solano College->Fairfield:
Take the trail through the Linear Park.
http://tinyurl.com/2y7but will show you how the trail
skirts the ball park and heads off eastwards.

Another time I would leave the Linear Park at Oliver and take Oliver to
Waterman, Vista Grande, Hilborn round the northwest side of Fairfield.

Fairfield->Davis http://tinyurl.com/ykpv7w

Just to be boring here's Dan's cue sheet

Oh Man... avoid the delta at all costs. flat, boring, windy, and
unintelligent, dangerous drivers. the worst part about the wind is if
its against you, it stays against you the entire way... about 60 miles
or more the way you are suggesting. Id rather climb hills. much better
then senery through the delta.

from farifield north to 121, to 128 past baryessa and onto putah creek.

far superior

sorry to fill the box with another emai, but I sent much more detailed
directions to Gabriel off list. If interested I can forward them along
to anyone else. The routes we are discussing are all through my old
bike roaming grounds.
