New Year's Day on Diablo

What could be a better start to the New Year than to join the traditional ride up Mt Diablo? There really is no single organized ride. Weather permitting, there will be hundreds of friends representing all East Bay bicycling organizations at the summit.

Map East CoverBART operates 4-trains/hr on Jan 1. The first train from west of the hills arrives at Walnut Creek BART at 8:45a (Lv Lake Merritt at 8:19a). Either follow someone or use EBBC's Map 2: East of the Hills to navigate California and San Ramon Blvds to the poorly maintained Mt. Diablo Scenic Boulevard past the Athenian School, then climb Southgate to the Junction where the gradient increases to the top. Descend Northgate, returning for Mexican lunch and ale on Locust St in Walnut Creek.

TIPS:
  • Pick a good partner to chat with during the climb
  • Prepare for possible chilly descent with a wind shell, wool under layers and long-fingered gloves
  • Although 2008 was balmy at the top, do not continue above the Junction (water & restroom available) if icy conditions exist
  • Control your speed on the descent even if you are experienced at handling a bicycle at 40+mph as State Park police ticket bicyclists for speeding
  • Take a snack
  • Enjoy the comraderie, smile at others, and learn about the many East Bay clubs by lingering at the Junction or summit!
  • Mt Diablo State Park fees are $7/auto and free for people who enter on foot or bicycle.
