CalTV tells us about a new bikeshare program that has begun on UC Berkeley campus. Stephanie Lin reports that for a mere $15 per semester, students have access to convenient bike transport:

I have also talked to
I have also talked to students involved in this project - they got the seed money from a UCB "environmental" grant and have now spent it all. They weren't able to identify concretely to me where future sources of funding would come from, though they do have ideas for the org's future. They were raising money by selling baked goods - I chose not to buy since I'm not clear this org will survive into the future. Also, I'm not sure that subsidizing UCB students and professors is a great use of the $$ - I'm a UCB student myself and though not rich, I can afford a bike to get around where there are perhaps others who can't, or who would benefit more by being able to have access to a bike. I'd love to hear more about the rationale of this group - what hole they are filling and how they decided this would have the most impact.
The campus is already, sadly, clogged with bikes- there's not enough bike parking, especially safe parking, and many parking meters nearby have had their heads removed, further limiting parking. That would be an issue I'd love to see addressed by funding, since those $15/yr bikers are likely to find bicycling to/around campus frustrating - not a great way to promote its convenience.
